On January 10, we kicked off our inaugural #ZebraChat, our new monthly, hour-long Twitter chat where we’ll discuss personal finance, tech, insurance, and more. For our first chat, we explored the topic “New Year’s Financial Resolutions.” The Zebra’s Neil Richardson, featured guests GOBankingRates and Student Loan Hero, and the Twitterverse shared tips and tricks on how to be successful, stay motivated, and ultimately, resolve these resolutions.

Did you miss our chat? No problem. Here are some of the highlights:

Q1.) What is your top new year’s financial resolution?

Financial resolutions cover a variety of topics, including paying off debt, improving credit scores, or saving for an emergency fund, travel, retirement, or downpayment for a home. Although everyone’s goals are different, planning for the future is a huge motivator.

Q2.) How do you set up your goals for long term success?

Plan, plan, plan! Break up your resolution(s) into smaller, attainable milestones to help keep your eye on the prize

Q3.) How do you stay organized? Do you use tools, software, or apps?

There’s no set way to stay organized. A simple pen and paper works. Apps like Mint, LearnVest, and Evernote are a popular choice. Spreadsheets are a great tool, too.

Q4.) What’s the biggest mistake people make that deters them from their goals?

Keep goals realistic and attainable, and expect to get derailed a little. Slip-ups will happen, and that’s okay. Tomorrow is a new day.

Q5.) Do you seek input from peers, experts, or resources to help you stay on track?

Surround yourself with a supportive group that will help keep you accountable. Online communities, your circle of friends, following popular blogs and influencers — whatever works best for you.

Q6.) What are some creative ways to cut expenses and save money?

Cut out subscriptions and automate savings if you can. Comb through bank and credit card statements, and look for opportunities to reduce expenses.

Q7.) What are some surprising behaviors that are costing us money?

That daily run to Starbucks, expensive hobbies, or staying loyal to brands/companies are all hurting our wallets.

Q8.) How do you plan to stay motivated 6 months from now?

Revisiting goals and progress can serve as a nice reminder of how far you’ve come and how much closer you are to success.

Q9.) What final tips would you give to someone who is just starting their financial resolution journey?

Be patient. Consider side hustles for extra cash (especially if you have a special talent or skill). Celebrate wins, big or small.

Finally, we didn’t forget about that $25 Amazon gift card.

Thank you to everyone who participated!

Our next #ZebraChat will be on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. CT. The topic will be Taxes and Side Hustles. Stay tuned for more information!
